Volume Five, Chapter Two

As Mr. Ville predicted, we were greeted with a massive chorus of boos upon returning and immediately accepting the request. Still, whether enticed by the meat skewers and my cooking, realizing the economic effects of trade or food supply issues, or perhaps both, the voices of opposition gradually diminished as Mr. Ville’s explanation progressed.

“If that’s the case, we should go as soon as possible.”

Me too! Me go to this… um, sea place too!’

Mr. Xenon was the first to speak up, having secured a plate full of meat skewers. Even Gomamiso, who had been munching on meat plucked from the bones, immediately perked up and flapped its wings.

“Alright then, let’s head out first thing tomorrow. We’ll check the sea’s condition and decide how to start our investigation.”

“Mm. We can’t just charge ahead… We’ll likely need to investigate underwater as well.”

“It might be good to ask the Fishery Guild about the current tide currents and wind directions.”

Mr. Ed, munching on freshly fried tempura that resembles sea bream, proposes a policy, followed by Ms. Aria, who casually takes more sushi rolls.

Ahhh… tidal currents. That totally slipped my mind! And wind direction, too—it’s something we’ve definitely got to account for during sea investigations. The engine-powered boats I know… well, they don’t exist in this world, so our navigation will rely on tides, wind, and human power.

“Wind can be supplemented by magic at worst… but tidal currents…”

“If we catch a strange current, even magic wind won’t help much.”

Mr. Ville furrows his brow while biting meat from a skewer, and Mr. Xenon also displays a wry smile on his handsome face.

Well, human power is nothing before nature…

“In any case, we start with an on-site investigation. Tomorrow, we’ll go and check the beach first.”

With those words from Mr. Ville, tomorrow’s plan is decided.

Originally, we’d planned to continue our little celebration late into the night, but we wrapped it up at a reasonable point and went to sleep…

“…Ah… Fuaa…”

Ms. Aria, with Gomamiso on her lap, is nodding off in the passenger seat, trying to stifle her yawns. She has just gotten up, so she is still half-asleep, and cuddling a warm Gomamiso certainly doesn’t help. No wonder she’s so drowsy…

“Are you okay, Ms. Aria? We’re almost there.”

“…Mmm… Sleepy…”

Me too… still sleepy…’

Gomamiso is also grumbling. Honestly, I’d love to let them sleep, but we’re almost at our destination. Walking would take quite a while, but my Camping Car will take us there in no time! Super convenient!

I’ve got a surprise prepared for today! Look forward to breakfast!”

“What? You, saying something like that, Rin…? Super curious now…”

’What about mine? My special treat?’

“For you, Gomamiso… it might be a bit difficult, but I’ll try to prepare something.”

The plan is to have breakfast on the beach after we finish some basic investigation. That’s when I’ll unveil the special thing I recently got!

I steer the Сamping Сar and park it at a familiar spot—yes, the place where that orca incident happened during my first visit to the beach.

At first glance… it looks the same as back then… huh? Wait?

Hold on… Am I seeing things? Something streamlined in white and black seems to be lying on the shoreline…

Daughter! Daughterrrrr!’

Oh no… am I hearing things too? A familiar voice is ringing clearly in my head?

‘Don’t ignore me, daughter! Me! It’s me! The messenger of fortune!’

I was deliberately ignoring you!”

Aaaaaaaaah! Just as I thought! It’s you! That orca!

“…Never expected to encounter that again…”

“Maybe it’s fate… I hope it’s not washed up this time…”

Seeing the creature flapping around the beach and skillfully waving its fins, Mr. Ville and I let out perfectly synchronized sighs.

Even now, the voice continues to ring in my brain—"Come quickly! Here! Over here!"—and it is so annoying!

Looks like we’ll have to go over there to get any answers…

I’ve been waiting for you, daaaaaughter!’

“Huh… waiting? What do you mean?”

‘Ohhhhh! It’s terrible! Very terrible!’

Sighing, Mr. Ville and the curious-looking Ms. Aria and everyone approach the flopping orca.

It seems to have learned its lesson, staying just at the water’s edge this time. The amount of water splashing is ridiculous!

Meeeee! Water! This me hate wateeeeer!’

“Whoa!? Stop… Gomamiso! I get it, so stop clinging!”

Gomamiso clings to me, looking utterly disgusted by the water spray. Clinging so desperately that its claws are painfully digging into me!

Mr. Ed gives a wry smile, while Mr. Xenon beside him shrugs with a similarly strained grin. No need to ask where they are looking.

“Wow… the orca is going totally wild!”

I thought it was noisy last time, but this is quite something too…”

Mr. Ed’s shield prevents us from getting completely soaked, but I still get a bit wet! My precious outfit from my world! Even if cleaning magic can fix it… I’ll hold a grudge for staining my favorite clothes!

You orca… just you wait! I’ll curse you to the ends of the world and turn you into a deep-fried fish!

I need your help with something! Listen to meeeee!’

“Ugh, so loud!”

As the orca’s movements become more intense, its mental voice grows even louder. Blocking my ears makes no difference.

…Oh right, when I first met this thing, Mr. Ville explained it uses some kind of "mental projection magic to directly slam thoughts into your head"… So blocking ears is pointless. Might as well give up…

‘Actually, daughter! Our beloved goddess Lyusia is in serious trouble!’

“Huh… Lady Lyusia!?”

Mr. Ville and I can’t help but exchange glances at the familiar name! Lyusia is the goddess worshipped in Mr. Rayer’s church!

…Does that mean the cause of the rough seas is related to Lady Lyusia?

‘Hmmm? Your reaction suggests you know something, daughter!’

“Ah, well… kinda… heard something from the Adventurers’ Guild and such…”

‘I see! Then that makes things easier! For the sake of the world’s most adorable me, please listen!’

The one who reacts to the splashing orca’s words is none other than Gomamiso. Until now, disliking water but quietly held in my arms, it suddenly stands firmly in front of the orca.

‘Hah? That whole ‘most adorable in the world’ thing—that’s obviously meant for me, you knooow?’

‘Haaah? Ever seen a mirror, little kitty? From any angle, I’m definitely the cuuuutest!’

The illustration’s description: Gomamiso is arguing with the orca, and Rin is standing with a strained expression.

‘Haaaaaaaah?‘

‘Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaah?’

…Wow… What a disaster. A kitten and an orca glaring daggers at each other over who’s cuter—who even wants to see this? Honestly, it’s starting to feel like one of those viral cat fight memes… If we leave them like this, are they going to end up screeching incoherently like in those infamous copypastas?

“…This is so dumb… Who cares which one is cuter?”

‘It matters, okay!’

‘It really does matter!’

I tried to break up their fight, only to get shut down in perfect harmony by both of them—how does that even happen? Has that orca completely forgotten about the whole “important matter” thing?

I was bracing myself for what seemed like an important conversation, but now all the tension has completely deflated…

“…No, seriously, I don’t care either way…”

I couldn’t agree more…”

Whether from exasperation or resignation, I hear Mr. Ville sigh as he gives the bickering Gomamiso and the orca a lukewarm stare.

Sure, letting them fight it out may eventually settle things, but what a waste of time! I pick up the hissing Gomamiso and step away from the orca.

‘Let me go! Me! This me is the cutest in the world! This me is the most adorable, the most lovable, the most angelic—me!’

‘The one who’s cutest in the world is meeeeeee!’

Even in my arms, Gomamiso continues throwing phantom cat punches into the air. The orca responds by flapping its fins and splashing water droplets. Because they’re battling on a damp beach, it’s literally turning into a muddy scuffle!

Still, the distance seems to have diminished their earlier intensity.

‘Heyyy! Heyyy! I’m the cutest, right? Riiiight?’

“Yes, yes, you’re cute. Now, what’s this "serious thing" you’re talking about?”

Gently stroking Gomamiso’s arched back as it continued to huff and puff in protest, I called out to the orca still flopping around dramatically at the water’s edge.

‘Oh! I was completely distracted by this impudent kitten and forgot entirely!’

“Seriously, why do you always have to be so provocative?”

‘Ufufufu… I’m the type who shows no mercy to anyone who dares to challenge my cuteness ♡. After all, I’m a †ruthless† and †cold-blooded† hunter ♡.’

“…Uh-huh, sure…”

Wow… The orca is saying the exact same things as Gomamiso…!

Could it be that its mental age is about the same as Gomamiso’s? I’ve heard conflicts only occur between equals… and I guess it’s really true.

‘…Oops! The kitten that can’t objectively view itself right now is irrelevant! This is about Lady Lyusia’s crisis!’

“Yes, yes, you said that already! What I want now is the details…”

‘Yes, of course! Daughter.’

It seems the orca finally remembers the main point and is about to explain the details.

Lady Lyusia is the goddess who governs the sea. Her power extends to all the seas in this world.’

“All the seas!? That sounds… incredibly vast, or rather, magnificent…”

‘Indeed, isn’t it? Moreover, she’s a very compassionate goddess who bestows her blessings upon the land-dwellers who worship her.’

I’m not quite sure what "governing" specifically means—maybe managing or watching over the seas? Even so, watching over all the seas in this world seems incredibly challenging. And on top of that, she also cares about humans… Lady Lyusia is amazing!

‘Isn’t that right, isn’t that right! Lady Lyusia is a wonderful goddess, isn’t she?’

It seemed my amazement was apparent, and the orca puffed out its chest with a proud expression. I’ve thought this before, but this creature is more expressive than I expected!

‘However, even though she is a goddess, she is not omnipotent.’

“Really? She seems like she can do anything?”

‘No matter how great Lady Lyusia’s divine virtues are, calming the vast seas and bestowing protection on the land is quite a difficult task.’

“If you consider both sea and land, it seems incredibly challenging… Could the cause be that she’s overwhelmed? Doing too much?”

I imagine a goddess stretching her hands in all directions, totally overheating from the effort. In my mind, it is that stained-glass lady from the church, panting and cartoonishly flustered.

Before my slightly humorous imagination, the orca lowers its eyes and slowly shakes its head.

‘No. Originally, there was a sacred treasure to assist Lady Lyusia. By performing a ritual with this treasure, she can spread her power to both sea and land… effortlessly and universally.’

Hmm. So thanks to this sacred treasure, she’s been able to bestow protection and exercise her power without issues until now. That’s why the sea remained calm and protection reached the land.

Maybe the treasure and the ritual work like amplifiers for the Goddess’s power, like a transmitter that sends her blessings around the world? If she could have continued this, there probably wouldn’t be a problem…

The orca has been making noise about something "serious happening", and the Adventurers’ Guild has been talking about the "sea being disturbed". The Church of Lyusia is also saying that the Goddess’s blessings aren’t reaching them… which means…

“Could something have happened that’s preventing the ritual from bestowing protection on sea and land?”

The moment I vocalized this inference from the information I’d gathered, the orca’s tail fin went rigid, and its eyes widened in surprise.

‘H-h-how did you know, daughter! Yes, yes, that’s exactly right!’

“Oh, no… It’s just the result of organizing the information I’ve obtained so far… Please don’t embarrass me by making a big deal out of it!”

Since the orca is nodding enthusiastically, my speculation—though it feels presumptuous to call it that—seems correct. There’s not a hint of mockery, and it genuinely seems surprised… but embarrassment overwhelms any pleasure. I don’t want such an exaggerated reaction to something so basic!

“…If that’s the case, then… either the ritual is being interfered with, or the sacred treasure for performing the ritual has gone missing?”

‘…Hmm… I didn’t expect you to figure it out that far…! Yes. Your deduction is spot on.’

As Mr. Ville spoke, the orca’s eyes—accompanied by a swaying tail—took on a serious look. I guess that means yes? Seeing the orca fall unnaturally silent after all its clownish behavior so far, I swallowed hard.

‘Just the other day, the temple housing the sacred treasure—essential for the ritual—was occupied by some unknown entity. Since then, no one has been able to approach the temple, and the ritual cannot be performed.’

“Wow… so that’s what happened…!”

A boss-level enemy taking over a key location and stealing a vital item, huh? That’s a pretty common trope in fiction. I’ve seen this scenario hook many times, and I often used this setting when I was the game master! It’s convenient for involving players in the scenario.

…But now, being on the solving side in real life… While I trust my party, I’m anxious about potential injuries, and what if we can’t solve the mystery? Games and reality are definitely different. I’d prefer they didn’t cause such problems so casually.

‘Ever since the enemy took the temple, the ritual can’t be performed—the sea’s gone wild, and Lady Lyusia’s blessing can’t reach the people… It’s total chaos like never before!’

Every time the orca expressed its distress, damp sand would scatter around. Though half-resigned and half-accustomed… the fact that this carefree orca is this worked up means it’s a seriously dire situation.

‘And on top of that, the enemy is way stronger than we thought…’

The orca suddenly went quiet, like a battery had died.

What kind of an enemy is waiting that could make this chatterbox deflate like this…?

“… is… it a sea monster…? Couldn’t you handle it yourselves?”

‘Ugh… We did send our most capable warriors! But… not a single one has returned!’

“Ah…”

Ms. Aria, who posed the natural question, received a dejected response from the orca.

…Well, this development is expected too. In game scenarios, you’ve got to pull the players into the story.

‘Normally, Lady Lyusia herself stepping in would be the fastest way to resolve this matter. However…’

“There are circumstances preventing the Goddess from taking the stage directly, right?”

You certainly see through everything, daughter. Yes, that’s right. The Goddess is completely occupied with calming the turbulent seas to prevent humans from being caught up in them, as well as looking after sea creatures.’

The Goddess seems to be handling quite a wide range of responsibilities all by herself.

If something goes wrong somewhere in that situation, of course, she can’t handle everything else. I get it… Being short-handed and overstretched is seriously rough…

Mr. Ville…”

“Don’t make that face, Rin. From what we’ve heard, we can probably handle the guild request, Rayer’s concerns, and this orca’s plea—all at once.”

When I glance up at Mr. Ville beside me, I can tell he’s thinking the same thing: this is something we can solve in one go!

After all, both the cause of the rough seas and the reason the Goddess’s blessing isn’t reaching are because of that "intruder"! If we deal with that one, everything will be resolved with a happy ending, right?

We’ve got no choice but to take this on!

“So all we need to do is deal with this intruder in the undersea temple?”

‘Yes, yes! That’s right, friend of the forest!’

“…Can we… fight… underwater…?”

‘Leave that to me, beloved of the thread! My assistance skills will amaaaaze you!’

Yup. As expected of my party. It seems we’re moving in the direction of accepting the orca’s request! Even without direct discussion, they seem to have figured out the best course of action from my exchange with the orca. Their comprehension is off the charts!

‘Come now! Daughter and demon’s child… everyone, line up in front of me! I’m about to show you my ultra-pretty and loooovely power♡.’

Its way of speaking is irritating, but we need its power to go to the sea… With mixed feelings, I stand before the orca again. That somewhat smug aura I’m sensing… isn’t just my imagination, is it?

‘Now then! Let me guide you to the world of the seeeeeeeeea!’

As soon as the members gather—with some lingering distrust—the orca dips its tail fin deep below the water’s surface.

…Uh, w-wait a minute! That preliminary movement… isn’t it the same one I saw during that seafood feast the other day…!

Before I can brace myself, the orca’s tail shot upward.

I knew itttttttt! A huge spray of water kicked up by the tail fin dances through the air…

“…?”

…The dreaded downpour from the orca’s tail that I feared never came. Cautiously, I open my eyes, which I have tightly shut in preparation for the seawater baptism.

“Huh? I’m not… wet?”

‘Of course not, daughter! This is to allow you to spend time underwater! There’s no way you’d get wet!’

I look all over my body and pat myself. The orca puffs out its chest proudly before me as my confusion persists.

…Hm? But somehow… its form seems more blurry than before, I think?

“…Rin, look carefully. There’s magic surrounding us.”

Mr. Ville points directly in front of us as I blink in surprise. When I focus my eyes… There is indeed something like a glittering membrane. Everyone is gently enclosed together in a round bubble…

“Wow… amazing! It’s like a water balloon!”

“Water balloon? What’s that? Is it magic from your world, Rin?”

“It’s not magic, but a toy. It’s like… a transparent, large balloon floating on water that people can get inside and play with… a large-scale plaything.”

I’ve never actually tried it myself, but I’ve seen it on TV! You get inside something like a giant hamster ball and roll or run on top of water! However, I remember that with water balloons, you could only play for a short time. Due to their structure, they were completely sealed to prevent water from entering. They must have needed regular ventilation.

Which means… this magical bubble around us may be the same…?

“Hey, orca. Can we breathe in here? Won’t we run out of oxygen?”

‘What’s this, daughter! Are you doubting my perfect technique!? How terrible… how cruel! I’m hurt! Prostrate yourself and apologize!’

“Ehhhhhh… Seriously…?”

The orca flops around on the beach even though I just asked a simple question.

Thisthing! Both its mindset and the nonsense it spouts are completely on the same level as Gomamiso! In fact, Gomamiso is actually cuter because it’s smaller…!

I’m so, so annoyed!

“Listen, Offshore Dweller. This is our first experience with something like this. Can you understand that even small details concern us?”

‘Hmm! The demon’s child is quite articulate!’

Mr. Ville stepped between me and the orca as we were creating an explosive atmosphere. He’s acting as a barrier between us, not just with words but physically as well.

‘Indeed, for children of men, the underwater world must be unknown territory.’

“Exploring the unknown is essentially what we ‘adventurers’ do, though.”

“Mm. The first step… is always nerve-wracking.”

“Besides, we fundamentally cannot survive underwater. I hope you can understand our instinctive fear…”

As the orca seemed to mull things over, the others chimed in one after another, backing up Mr. Ville’s words. As for me, who can’t help but spar verbally with the orca… maybe the only thing I can do is keep this kitten—who’s bound to blurt something dumb—quiet.

‘Hmph! You don’t even understand that much—‘

“Okay, Miso. That’s enough.”

As the kitten flaps its wings with a triumphant expression, I readjust my hold and press its face firmly against my chest. Gomamiso is squirming and growling, but I can’t let it ruin this atmosphere that’s starting to come together nicely!

I know air is for breathing, but just this once—read the room!

‘Mmph, Pwaah! Why? Why are you covering my royal mouth!? You’re preventing my adorable voice from being heard!’

“Well, you know. It’s what we call adult circumstances.”

Indeed. As expected of a creature said to be made of fluid—the feline race. Gomamiso slips out of my restraint and slaps my chest with a face full of indignation. Even though its legs have gotten a lot chunkier than before, it doesn’t hurt much. It must’ve kept its claws sheathed and held back its strength this time. Good job, Misoyou’re learning!

‘I see, I see. I now understand the concerns of you, children of men. If anything is troubling you, please don’t hesitate to tell me! Dispelling the worries of the young is part of my duty, after all!’

“That’s helpful. Now, would you answer the earlier question?”

‘Yes, yes. Of course! Inside this blessing… this bubble, you don’t need to worry about drowning or being crushed! I’ll guide everyone safely, without injury, to the Goddess!’

The orca waves its fin with a distorted snout as Mr. Ville asks again. Is that… the orca’s way of smiling? What a ferocious face!

Still, to think it handles not only breathing but also water pressure! This bubble—or should I call it a blessing?—is seriously impressive!

We don’t have to worry about getting crushed by pressure or dealing with decompression sickness!

“…Crushed…?”

Next to me as I marvel, Ms. Aria tilts her head curiously, not quite understanding.

I wonder if things like water pressure aren’t well known in this world?

“Water is actually quite heavy. So underwater, you can get crushed from all directions by the weight of the water itself.”

“Eh… So if you dive underwater… You get squished?”

“It’s fine in shallow areas… but if you go deep enough, well…”

Did she imagine something popping? Ms. Aria’s lovely face suddenly clouded over.

To tell the truth, the scariness of water pressure isn’t just that…

The deeper you dive, the more pressure builds on your body, right? This causes nitrogen to dissolve into your body. If you ascend rapidly in that state… as the pressure decreases, the gas components that were dissolved in your blood and tissues form bubbles that can block capillaries. It’s like when you open the cap of a carbonated drink and bubbles suddenly form inside the container, right? Though it’s not exactly the same, I think that’s the closest image.

That’s why I’ve heard that when scuba diving, you need to ascend slowly, taking more time than you spent going down. Honestly, this world doesn’t seem very scientifically advanced, so scuba-like equipment probably doesn’t exist… but primitive diving where fishermen bite down on some kind of hose to dive wouldn’t be strange…

…Maybe I should warn the Fishery Guild? I don’t know the treatment, but I could at least tell them it’s better to ascend slowly.

“…Water is… scary… isn’t it?”

“Yes. But it seems we’ll be safe and secure inside this bubble!”

Well, for us this time, there doesn’t seem to be any worry about decompression sickness! I decided not to say anything more to Ms. Aria. There’s no need to teach her about things she doesn’t need to worry about and unnecessarily frighten her.

“Mm. That orca… is a bit… noisy… but amazing!”

Oh! The orca’s reputation is rising! Good for you, orca! If Ms. Aria is on your side, it means Mr. Ed is also your ally. You’re gaining friends, well done, little orca!

‘Now, let’s go, children of meeeeeen!’

As the orca turns and dives into the sea, the bubble containing us sinks beneath the waves as if pulled along.

“Wow… amazing…”

The world seen through the bubble is incredibly beautiful. Bands of sunlight penetrate the pale blue world, and pure white bubbles rise from the seabed. In this dreamlike scene, fish shimmer with colorful scales as they swim by. Despite being so full of life, the underwater world is tranquil. All I can hear is the distant sound of flowing currents.

“So… this is what it’s like underwater…”

“It’s… beyond words…”

It’s not just me. Everyone seems captivated by this scenery.

Well, that makes sense. Unlike me, who, while never having seen it directly, has watched underwater footage on TV and such, this must be an entirely new sight for Mr. Ville and the rest.

Ms. Aria has her ice-colored eyes wide open, speechless. She’s gazing outside the bubble with sparkling eyes. In that state, I’m not even sure if she notices Mr. Ed holding her shoulder beside her.

Each time the orca’s tail fin strokes the water, the bubble enclosing us sinks deeper. From cyan to marine blue. Then cobalt, navy, midnight blue… The blue gradually deepens. Thanks to the faint glow on the surface of the bubble surrounding us, we can see our surroundings, albeit dimly. I wonder if this is what it’s like viewing from a deep-sea exploration vessel?

The illustration’s description: Everyone in a bubble, surrounded by fish.

Rin, that’s quite an unusual shape, but is that a fish too?”

“It is a fish! It’s a fish that lives in the deep parts of the sea… a deep-sea fish, Mr. Ville!”

Occasionally, strange-shaped fish pass by in front of us. Mr. Ville raised his voice with rare excitement upon seeing them. To excite even Mr. Ville like that… the sea’s power is amazing! Well, I guess anyone would react that way if they could dive into the sea without worrying about their life and witness the mysteries of the deep sea up close.

Even I, who has seen things like globefish and anglerfish at fish markets and live exhibitions at aquariums, am seeing deep-sea fish in their natural environment this close for the first time!

“I see… so that really is a fish… Still, it doesn’t look very edible.”

“That’s what you might think! But many deep-sea fish are actually delicious!”

“Really, Rin!?”

Often, those kinds of fish turn out to be tasty. Well, deep-sea fish tend to have more fat for buoyancy adjustment, more moisture in their flesh, and a gelatinous texture overall… so they’re definitely a bit unique.

“Ah! That one! The one that just crossed in front of us—Survival says that ‘the flesh is soft and maintains a fluffy texture even when heated, melting in your mouth’!”

“That one? It looks quite ugly…”

As we continue such aimless conversation, our surroundings keep getting darker and darker. Before I can even think, the entire bubble is swallowed by darkness… and then—

‘Hehehehe! We’ve arrived, children of meeeeeen!’

The view suddenly opens up before us.

Beyond the swaying current, I can see a white marble temple wrapped in soft light.

Moving its tail fin even more powerfully, the orca leads the way as the large bubble enveloping us floats toward that direction.

The temple, which is getting closer and closer, has beautiful pillars and walls. Despite standing underwater, there are no eerie writhing crustaceans, coral, or seaweed attached to it. Perhaps it’s due to the blessing of being near the Goddess, or because followers diligently maintain it… or maybe both.

“…So there truly is a palace beneath the waves…”

That phrase suddenly crossed my mind. Was it from The Tale of the Heike?

Nirai Kanai, the journey to FudarakuI grew up in a country with many folktales, myths, and forms of faith related to the sea, and looking at this, well… Even though I was raised under modern science, I can see how people back then might have believed that something like this really existed down in the depths.

Thinking about it that way, I’m now standing before the embodiment of ancient people’s dreams!

“This is amazing…! I never thought something like this would really exist at the bottom of the sea…!”

“Mm… like a dream.”

The bubble containing us, who can only stare in awe at the scene before us, slowly moves into the temple. The surrounding walls and pillars emit a faint milky glow by themselves. Because of this, visibility inside the temple is significantly better. Moreover, there are blue glowing orbs installed here and there, making it even more visible. …Is this the color that firefly squid or bioluminescent plankton emit when they glow?

‘We’ve arrived!’

Just as I hear the orca’s exceptionally loud voice, the bubble snaps. What, seriously!? If the bubble breaks underwater, all the problems with breathing, water pressure, and everything else will hit at once…!

I instinctively squeeze my eyes shut and brace myself, but… I don’t feel the expected suffocation or pressure. In fact, I don’t even feel my body getting wet…?

‘What’s wrong, daughter?’

“What do you mean ‘what’s wrong’… the bubble broke… Huh…?”

The orca’s carefree voice sounded as if it found me suspicious. I was about to get angry at how casual it was being… then I finally noticed the current situation.

“The bubble is still there?”

The bubble that has seemingly popped is still faintly glimmering around each of us individually. Until now, it felt like we were inside a large soap bubble, but now it feels like we’re covered in a stretchy film that fits our bodies perfectly.

Yet I don’t feel any suffocation or difficulty moving.

As I try various movements to check how it felt—bending and stretching my arms—the orca puffs out its chest proudly in front of me.

‘Yes. From here on, you’ll be walking through the temple. Wouldn’t it be easier for each of you to move individually rather than being clustered together in one large bubble?’

“I see…! You really thought this through, huh, orca…”

‘Hmph! That’s right, that’s right! You may praise me more, daughter!’

Hmm… I wasn’t particularly praising it, but I guess that’s how the orca heard it. The orca, turning its body in a circle, seems to be in a very good mood.

‘Haaah? You’re not being praised at aaaall? I’m much smarter!’

‘Haaah? Not understanding my greatness… little kitty is such a chiiiild?’

Ahhh… once again, an ugly dispute has started between beings of the same level…

Why do Gomamiso and the orca always clash like this?

“…Could it be what they call hatred of one’s own kind, Rin?”

“Ah… that fits incredibly well…”

Mr. Xenon, who shrugged his shoulders in exasperation, is smiling with a troubled expression.

I see. These two are too much alike…

“Come oooon… Can you please stop fighting already…?”

Even with my patient nature, this is really starting to irritate me!

Should I fillet the orca and make it into tempura? Should I cut Miso into pieces and make it into a healthy cat soup? Hmm?

‘…I-I’m a good kitty…!’

‘What’s with that look, daughter! I’m being good too!’

Perhaps sensing my murderous intent, Gomamiso and the orca who had been so fiercely clashing quickly distanced themselves. Gomamiso even whimpers while clinging to my legs, begging to be held…

Ah, geez…! When you look up at me with that face, I have no choice but to pick you up! Really… Gomamiso, you’re lucky your face is so cute!

“So, is that building where we need to head?”

‘Yes, yes, that’s right! In the innermost part of that temple resides our sea-dwelling goddess, the loving mother, Lady Lyusia!’

The direction the orca’s fin points is toward the shimmering white marble temple.

Following the orca as it begins to swim leisurely ahead of us, I’m about to take a step and…

“Whoa! What is this! I can walk normally!”

I thought we’d be floating around due to buoyancy, but that’s not the case at all! I can walk just like on land! With each step, there’s no bouncing sensation, no water resistance preventing forward movement… none of that!

‘Ah, yes. I forgot to mention! As the daughter says, you can walk underwater just as you would on land.’

“Wow! I don’t even feel water resistance—this is incredible!”

‘This way, you’ll find it easier to move underwater. I believe it will also help during combat.’

The orca explains this to me as I get excited, but I can hear cheers from around me, too, so it’s not just a special feature for me.

Despite being underwater, where the refraction rate should differ, visibility is almost the same as on land. In fact, even though we’re underwater, the seawater doesn’t sting my eyes. Although we’re in a completely different environment, isn’t it convenient that there’s no change in how we move our bodies or see things? After all, there’s no need to accustom our senses to the environment we’re in. It means we can explore and fight just like we always do!

There will surely be combat this time too, so it’s better to have as little discomfort as possible. As I try jumping in place, walking around to verify the sensation… various movements… a pair of arms suddenly reach out from behind me.

“It’s fine that you’re having fun, Rin.”

“But how about we get moving now?”

With one voice sounding troubled and the other holding back laughter, both of my hands are gently seized. Mr. Ville and Mr. Xenon, who have somehow positioned themselves on either side of me, grab my arms.

My feet that are floating in the air drop down abruptly… Wait, isn’t this the classic “alien getting caught” pose?

“…Ah…! I-I’m sorry!”

“No, it’s fine. It’s such a surreal scene. I understand why you would want to get excited, Rin.”

Ville is right. Besides…”

Almost simultaneously, my arms are released, and I quickly bow my head. But what comes is not a reprimand. Rather, I’m actually getting agreement—what’s going on?

“Look over there, Rin…”

“Eh, Oh… ooooh…”

In the direction Mr. Xenon points with a resigned shrug of his shoulders are Mr. Ed and Ms. Aria, cuddling together while gazing at the colorful corals and fish. It’s incredibly beautiful, and likely a once-in-a-lifetime place… as a date spot, it’s definitely top-tier.

“Seeing that, your excitement about swimming seems quite charming in comparison.”

Mr. Xenon drops his shoulders slightly with a face that looks like he might spit sand. Mr. Ed and Ms. Aria are as inseparable as ever, and honestly, just watching them makes me feel all warm inside. Happy couples really are nice, right?

Ed! Aria! We’re moving on, come back!”

“Ehhh!!! It was just getting good!!!”

“…It’s been a while since… our date…!”

With a sigh, Mr. Ville called out, and the two reluctantly returned, grumbling as they did. Ms. Aria puffs out her cheeks in protest—but still keeps holding Mr. Ed’s hand.

Hmm, so close!

‘Everyone seems to be having fun. I understand! Lady Lyusia’s world is beautiful, isn’t it? Truly wonderful, right?’

“Yes. It’s a bit frustrating, but I have to agree. I never thought such a beautiful world would exist at the bottom of the sea…!”

Now I can even forgive the orca’s smug face!

Indescribable, beyond words… it must be referring to a world like this.

‘Now then… let’s proceed to Lady Lyusia! Lady Lyusia must be eagerly awaiting all of you.’

Led by the orca as it powerfully strokes through the water, we finally pass through the gates of the white marble temple.

What awaits us beyond here… I’m worried, but with everyone together, I feel like we’ll somehow manage.

I hope we can catch some delicious fish to take home.”

I completely agree. Let’s search along the way for some tasty meals.”

My muttering while stroking the now completely calm Gomamiso’s back was clearly heard—oops!

That’s my fellow foodie for you!

“Sashimi, sushi, carpaccio, salt-grilled, simmered, fried, tempura, seafood salad… Ooh, and if we find any shellfish, it could be delish fried in the garlic oil!”

“Looking forward to it, Rin.”

Our fists bump together as we extend them toward each other.

◆◇◆

Guided by the orca we had saved, we find ourselves in an underwater temple. In terms of its indescribable beauty, you could say this place is a kind of Palace of the Dragon King from the tale of Urashima Taro.

…Well, there aren’t any sea bream or flounder dancing around or anything…

The moment I step into the great hall we are led to—

“—!!!”

Even I can sense it—an overwhelmingly powerful presence looming in the depths.

Before a being whose power utterly surpassed human comprehension, my head naturally bows and my knees buckle. I can feel Gomamiso’s fur standing on end in my arms. A fundamental fear and awe. I understand from the bottom of my heart that this is what they call "reverence.”

If even I felt this way, Mr. Ville, whom I glance up at, seems to be affected even more. Sweat trickled down his sunburned cheeks, now drained of color. Am I imagining the groaning sound coming through his clenched teeth?

Forcing my trembling legs forward, I somehow make it to the raised platform at the back of the hall… Before a massive clamshell throne, I reach my limit. I cannot move any further. My instincts refuse.

As we bow on the soft floor covering, I feel the gaze of sea-colored eyes seated upon a pearl-toned throne fall upon us.

“Welcome back, my children who went ashore. Don’t be afraid, please raise your heads.”

A voice neither high nor low… though I have never heard it before, it feels strangely familiar. This mysterious voice vibrated my eardrums. Despite the dignity that resonated strongly even from a distance, the tone itself was surprisingly friendly?

As I timidly raise my face, what greets my eyes is overwhelming blue.

“Ah! It’s been so long since children of the land have come here!”

Soft, undulating long hair—sometimes gently swaying, sometimes like a veil of raging white waves—is pale blue. Eyes filled with compassion that softens into a smile are deep aqua blue harboring abyssal darkness…

This is… this person is the Goddess who rules the sea—Lady Lyusia!

What stands before us is unbearably beautiful, kind… and absolutely terrifying. The birthplace of life that still embraces countless living beings in its arms. The personification of the mother sea.

“For you who went ashore, this must be a homecoming after a long absence. Have you been doing well? Are you finding it hard to breathe, or are you injured? Are you hungry?”

…U-Um! Despite her elegant and dignified appearance, her behavior is like "a mother firing off questions to her child who’s returned home after a long time"! What’s with this gap?! It makes my heart skip a beat!

‘They’re fine, Most High, our Goddess! I’ve been taking proper care of everything!’

“Yes, of course. I knew you would carry it through, Maal.”

‘Absolutely! You can count on me—Maal would never disappoint you!’

…Huh? Wait a minute? Did she just call the orcaMaal”!?

Orca, youyou have a name!

The orca, now called Maal, swims around excitedly right next to the goddess. This kind of reminds me of orca shows I’ve seen at aquariums!

The illustration’s description: the Goddess.

‘Now, now, our Goddess! While reunion with your children is joyous, it’s time to explain the situation!’

“Ah, you’re right. The children must be eager to know as well…”

After playing and frolicking for a while, the eyes of the Goddess and the orca turn toward us. Looking closely, I notice the orca’s eyes… are blue eyes similar to the Goddess’s… I just realized that now!

“…Now… I’m pleased that you’ve answered this sudden summons, my children.”

As the goddess smiles and raises her hand, something sprouts up right before our eyes—red, yellow, and all kinds of vibrant colors.

I reach out hesitantly and find it super soft. But push it down a little and there’s resistance, like it’s gently pushing back—just like a memory foam cushion!

“It’s called a ball chair sponge. It’s very comfortable to sit on. Please sit there and make yourselves comfortable.”

As the smiling Goddess looks at us, I glance around at my companions. We are all doing the same—exchanging looks, our gazes locking in sync. Every single face I see is wearing a determined expression.

“…Very well, we shall gratefully accept…!”

As if breathing together, we all nod at the same timing. Following Mr. Ville’s deep bow, I bow once and sit down on the sea sponge that has sprouted before me.

“…W-Wow…! So soft!”

I meant to stay quiet, really… but the seat is so comfy I cannot help blurting it out. Sitting down feels even better than when I poked it with my hand! The entire seat surface supports my weight, and just when I thought I would sink in completely, it catches and supports my body at a certain point…! Even the latest zero-gravity cushions or high-end memory foam cushions pale in comparison… that’s how it feels! This would make long-distance drives in the Camping Car so much more comfortable if I put it on the seats!

“Fufufu. Wonderful comfort, isn’t it? It’s my favorite too. I have them on my seat as well.”

The moment I came to my senses, the Goddess’s gentle voice with a hint of laughter pierced my eardrums.

Uwaaah! She heard me clearly!

“Uh… ah, I’m so sorry! It just feels so good…!”

“Please don’t be so formal. Rather, I’m very happy that you like it.”

I tried to bow my head in embarrassment, but she gently stopped me. Looking up, I see the Goddess beaming at me, her expression practically shouting, "I found a kindred spirit!”

“After this matter is resolved, you can take it back with you. Ah, if it’s difficult to carry, I could ask Maal to transport it to the shore for you…”

Lady Lyusia! I understand you’re enjoying the conversation, but shouldn’t we start with the explanation first?’

The orca restrained the excited Goddess with a slightly exasperated look. So you’re playing the straight-man role here…! That’s quite a gap in your character too!

“Ahem… Yes, you’re right. Now then, children of men. I believe you’ve heard from Maal here that the sea has been turbulent lately and that my blessing hasn’t been reaching you.”

The goddess cleared her throat slightly and composed her expression. Following her lead, we adjusted our positions on the sponges and prepared to listen.

I bestow blessings upon the sea and land using a jewel called the ‘Pearl of Compassion’.”

The Goddess lowered her eyebrows and cast down her eyes as she quietly began speaking.

The Pearl of Compassion, which amplifies the Goddess’s power, is apparently enshrined in an underwater temple located a short distance from this one. During rituals, the Goddess personally visits that temple. However, while the Goddess was away from this area for business, someone attacked the temple… and that brings us to the current situation.

“…Eh, wait, this isn’t a temple? Then, what is this place?”

“While it can be called a temple, this place is more akin to my residence. Therefore, it’s not very suitable as a place of prayer. It makes it extra difficult to exercise my power…”

I have thought this place is like a workplace related to the Goddess’s duties, but it is actually her private space!

…Looking closely, there are colorful conch shell decorations and cute fish ornaments… it definitely has the feeling of a girl’s room?

Perhaps noticing me looking around the room out of curiosity, the Goddess smiles a little shyly. Uuu…! Despite being a very important goddess, showing the side of a girl her age is unfair! My heart cannot take this!

“Ahem… Of course, I can still exercise my power without the pearl. But there’s a vast difference in both quality and quantity of blessings I can bestow with and without it.”

The Goddess cleared her throat lightly as if changing the atmosphere and continued her explanation.

If the blessing power with the pearl is considered 100, apparently the current power without it is only about one-third of that. And because the power of blessing is weaker than usual, she has to compensate with frequency… however, since the temple is occupied by someone and inaccessible… the Goddess continues to bestow power from this residence…

“Once I bless that area of the sea, then I need to bless this area next… and so on… but to prevent the sea from getting any rougher, I can’t afford to rest…”

‘Uuu… this is merely Lady Goddess’s private chamber. It’s not suited for prayer or bestowing blessings like the temple is, after all. As I said earlier, we’ve sent messengers and soldiers multiple times to reclaim the temple, but… not a single one has returned! We really did send our most skilled warriors!’

I suppose… they were all wiped out…”

As the orca drops its tail fin dejectedly, the Goddess also slumps her shoulders. I’m not sure if they can be called master and servant, but… maybe they’re more alike than I thought? Their movements are synchronized, and though it might be inappropriate to say, I think it’s cute.

“So… having determined that this is beyond our capabilities, I decided to borrow the children of men’s strength to resolve the situation.”

‘We thought that you adventurers would be accustomed to such rough work!’

I see. Indeed, as adventurers, we’re used to rough work. Even if traps are set up along the way, we can disarm them as we proceed, or conversely, we could set traps for our opponents.

In that sense, we might be perfect for the job.

“Ideally, events in the sea should be resolved within the sea. If we took time to train our forces, we might see a chance of victory…”

‘But right now, we thought it better to resolve the problem quickly rather than waste time wringing our hands.’

“Won’t you please lend us your strength?”

Having made up her mind, the Goddess drew her lips together firmly as the orca nestled beside her and swayed its tail fin. These two really have such similar auras…

And… our answer is decided from the start, without any need for discussion.

“If we can be of help, by all means…!”

Mr. Ville gets off the sea sponge and kneels before the Goddess. We follow suit and bow our heads.

If the sea continues to be rough like this, it would be a massive blow to the trading city of Ellarge. We can’t overlook a crisis threatening our base of operations!

The Goddess’s eyes, watching us accept her divine mission, visibly soften.

“My, my, my! As expected of the children Maal had faith in! Thank you so much!”

‘See, see! My judgment is quite good, isn’t it?’

Next to the Goddess who is giggling excitedly, the orca puffs out its chest proudly. Perhaps some of the Goddess’s worries are relieved?

“But please don’t push yourselves too hard. While I certainly want you to retrieve the pearl, your lives are important too. If you feel it’s impossible, please return here without forcing yourselvesю As long as you have your lives, you can try again any number of times.”

Those compassionate eyes gaze at us. There is no hint of deception in those clear eyes. Retrieving the pearl must be the primary goal, but she’s equally concerned about us, as shown in her eyes.

When someone treats us like this… it makes us want to give our all to meet those expectations…

A warm feeling spread through my chest. Is this what they call a sense of duty? I gently press my palm against my chest to keep that light from going out. I know that this flame residing in my chest will be the driving force to solve this problem.

“This matter seems urgent. I think we should depart right away… will you guide us to the location?”

‘Yes! I have duties all around as Lady Lyusia’s assistant, but on my way, I’ll be guiding you to the temple.’

Mr. Ville rose with a clatter of his armor, and the orca wagged its tail fin as his gaze turned toward it.

Hmm… judging from the orca’s words, the Goddess’s side seems quite busy too. That makes sense. They apparently sent in personnel for subjugation missions, so they must be quite short-handed…

“Thanks for guiding us even though you’re so busy, Orca. Just having someone lead us to our destination makes a huge difference!”

Before I know it, I am patting the head of the orca that has swam right in front of me.

I think I can use the car’s navigation system, but having someone who knows the way to guide us provides a different level of reassurance…

‘Heheh! You may praise me more, daughter! Here! Here!! Here!!!’

“If not for that aspect of your personality… I could thank you more sincerely…”

‘Right? This me is the better one, right? So come on, you can pet me! Come ooon!’

Well, that’s what happens when you’re honest, I knew it!

With Gomamiso jumping onto my shoulder too, we’ve become a noisy little bundle! Everyone’s gazes feel uncomfortably warm!

“Fufufu… Maal and the human child get along well. It’s wonderful to form friendships that transcend living environments!”

Among all the gazes, the Goddess’s compassion-filled smile as she watches us playing around is just too much to bear!

“Oh yes, speaking of guides… there are children who have received my blessing in that temple. They are skilled at hiding. I’m sure they’re still alive.”

“Eh? Really? If they were in the temple, does that mean… they know the internal structure and such…?”

“Yes. If you can meet up with them, they’ll surely be of help to you.”

The Goddess tightens her eyes and nods slightly. Deep in her blue pupils, there seems to be anxiety, grief, and concern like sediment.

The children skilled at hiding, huh… I hope they’re alive. Knowing the internal structure would make them the strongest allies we could ask for!

“In that case, the sooner we depart, the better.”

“Mm. We don’t know what the situation is like there, but…”

“Sometimes, life or death is decided in just a second.”

Hmm. Everyone’s thinking the same thing. Actually, because they deal with life-and-death situations daily, Mr. Xenon and the rest of the party seem more composed at times like this, I think.

You heard us, offshore dweller. If possible, please guide us to that temple now.”

‘Certainly, children of the land! Then let me guide you—to the ocean’s depths, where light fades, where the currents lead, to the altar at the edge of the sea!’

The orca twirls its body around and opens its mouth wide in delight. Its bright red mouth interior and the sharp pearl-colored teeth line up inside strangely burn into my memory.
