Part Two, Section One: “Saints And Devils”
Chapter Fifty-three (Grace’s POV)
“Ohohoho! Devils are no match for me, Emily Martilas!”
Emily, the eldest daughter of the Martilas family, laughed confidently. With the recent surge of mysterious disappearances across the continent, her reaction to the unbelievable fact that devils were the culprits was quite striking. Did she harbor no fears?
“Don’t let it bother you. Sister Emily just gets like that sometimes. Once you get used to it, you can just brush it off.”
“Even though the four of us managed to capture him together, you have quite the talent for acting as if it’s solely your achievement. How does that fit with being a saint?”
The man who identified himself as an exorcist, Klaus Esselbein, had been dispatched from the headquarters of the Clamu Church in the Kingdom of Dalbhat as the guardian of the four saints of the Martilas family.
Klaus, a silver-haired young man with blue eyes, informed us that Philia was also being guarded by an exorcist.
Exorcists were individuals who had been fighting devils since long ago, operating in secret around the world under the orders of the church.
He commanded a pale-faced, otherworldly figure—a demon named Satanakia. As the saying goes, “Seeing is believing”, he indeed demonstrated to us the power of devils firsthand.
Against Satanakia, who possessed high magic power and vitality, we found ourselves struggling in a tension different from battles with demons. However, Emily’s restraining spell finally immobilized him.
To achieve that goal, the remaining three of us executed a series of diversions upon diversions to create an opening. Therefore, it was not surprising for the third sister, Jane, to express her dissatisfaction with Emily’s attitude.
According to Klaus, apparently, devils remain alive even if you cut off their heads. Naturally, he refrained from demonstrating this, deeming it inappropriate for women to witness.
“Have you now come to understand the terror of devils? The mastermind devil, Asmodeus, possesses magic power many times stronger than Satanakia.”
Devil Asmodeus, the mastermind behind the mysterious disappearances, was actually targeting the body of my master who became the Great Saint, Lady Philia.
At the same time, Asmodeus was targeting those with high magic power, which was why Klaus came to protect the Martilas family with its four saints.
“I don’t like this devil called Asmodeus.”
“Yes. He’s the true culprit disturbing the peace… I can’t forgive him either.”
“To consider me, Emily Martilas, an extra to Philia Adenauer… He doesn’t know how to treat a lady.”
“…”
Klaus fell silent after hearing Emily’s pointless rivalry and jealousy.
If not for this, she would just be a domineering older sister…
“Sister Emily, at this rate, Mr. Klaus will soon regret being our guard.”
“Amanda, I haven’t said anything strange.”
The second daughter, Amanda, subtly admonished Emily, but it didn’t seem to have much effect. Since hearing that Lady Philia had become the Great Saint, Emily had been undergoing rigorous training alone. Knowing that this matter was likely to become a battle concerning Lady Philia, she doesn’t seem pleased.
“Sister Emily, I hope you’re not thinking you can become number one if devils capture Ms. Philia.”
“Jane, please don’t underestimate me! I will triumph over Great Saint Philia with my own strength. Yes, by becoming a Great Saint myself! Being captured by devils is unacceptable. That’s—”
“That’s how one born to the proud Martilas family should live!”
““Father…!””
The one who entered the parlor was the father of us four, Count Martilas.
I thought Father had already retired for the night since it was so late…
“Well said, Emily. Lady Philia is a magnificent saint. Surpassing her will be no easy feat. So the scoundrels behind these mysterious disappearances are plotting against Miss Philia? Then we shall protect her by resolving the incidents!”
“No, Count. Your daughters are being targeted as well, which is why I came to guard them.”
“Father! Leave it to me! I swear on the Martilas name… I will resolve this beautifully, gracefully, and… elegantly!”
“So, Ms. Emily, please listen. What I’m trying to say is—”
Father and Emily’s bad habits were showing. Klaus looked like he was about to cry. Satanakia was looking at him with a worried expression. So even devils could be troubled…
Nevertheless, the Saint Summit gathers women with a high level of magic power. I have a bad feeling something will happen there.
At the thought that something might happen to Lady Philia… my chest tightened.
She saved this continent. In that case, would it not be our turn to help her now?
“Alright, I shall also go to Parnacota, where the Saint Summit is held! Grace had been under Miss Philia’s care, so it’s only proper to pay our respects.”
“I, too, intend to pay her my utmost respect.”
“Um, please be careful not to act impulsively during the Saint Summit. I might get scolded by the church.”
And so, it was decided that we, the four sisters, along with the exorcist Klaus, his attendant Satanakia, and our father, Count Martilas, would head to Parnacota.
“Hahaha!”
“Ohohoho!”
“Senior Elsa, I wish I could switch places with you… I want to go to Lady Philia’s place…”
Lady Philia, I’m so happy to get to see you again so soon. I definitely won’t lose to you, Ms. Mia!
