Chapter One Hundred and Fourty-Nine: The Second Prince’s Retainer

Second Prince Boromias arrived after the first round of serving had finished, just as the line for seconds was beginning to form. Boromias ignored that line—or rather, didn’t even notice it—paying it no attention as he cut in front and stood before Karen.

Alchemist Karen. I heard that you created a panacea. I am grateful that you made such a precious thing to carry out my orders.”

Karen glanced at the adventurers who had been pushed out of line by Boromias and his retainers. They didn’t hide their openly displeased expressions and glared at Boromias. But since it was just for seconds, they seemed willing to wait for now. Karen felt relieved that this happened after the first round of serving had finished, and judged that it would be best to end her conversation with Boromias as quickly as possible.

“Please don’t worry about it. I suddenly wanted to eat it myself and made it just because I wanted to make it. So, what can I do for you?”

“Don’t be modest, Karen. No, Ms. Karen. It must have taken tremendous effort and cost to create something like that, right? I’ll cover those costs. Submit a bill later.”

“No, no, it’s fine. While it’s certainly expensive as food, it’s not that costly in terms of raw materials for a potion. Rather, the magic mushrooms used for magical power recovery potions cost more. Is that all you needed?”

The man next to Boromias glared sharply at Karen. Karen’s heart skipped a beat, wondering if her feelings of "then the conversation is over, so could you please leave quickly" had shown on her face.

“Despite being a commoner, do you intend to rudely dismiss His Highness Boromias’ consideration!?”

“Consideration?”

Karen blinked in bewilderment.

“Stop that. Even if she’s a commoner, she’s a high-ranking alchemist. Moreover, she’s created a precious potion. We should show respect.”

“But she’s a commoner!”

Karen realized then that Boromias was surrounded by knights from the Royal Guards. The breastplates of their armor bore the crest of a shield decorated with roses and a crown. The rose, crown, and shield were the emblems of the Royal Guards.

Yet Boromias’ breastplate bore a pegasus, dragon, and shield—the emblem of the Royal Knight Order. She was sure that when they entered the dungeon, Boromias had been surrounded by knights from the same Royal Knight Order, but it seemed there had been a change in the people attending him.

“If a commoner has created a precious potion, shouldn’t she present it to Your Highness Boromias first? Your Highness Boromias is the supreme commander of this dungeon investigation team! Yet not rushing to present it to Your Highness Boromias first is the height of disrespect!”

He spoke in such a clear, resonant voice that it reached the ears of the adventurers, who had sharp hearing and were mostly commoners. While Karen watched anxiously, the Royal Guards’ knight’s speech continued.

You should normally be punished, but His Highness Boromias has taken the trouble to come here himself, to acknowledge your work, and even offered to cover the costs! You should prostrate yourself in gratitude and present that potion to His Highness!”

The Royal Guards’ knight wore a proud expression full of the satisfaction of having made his point, leaving Karen speechless. Even she could tell—this knight was the type of person who shouldn’t have been brought to this place.

“Hey, Stef. That’s really going too far…”

Your Highness Boromias is too kind! At this rate, you’ll be looked down upon by these commoners, by these adventurers! We are born of noble blood. We differ from those here in the very weight of our words and the value of our lives!”

To say that in front of high-ranking adventurers of all people—as Karen grew even more dumbfounded, Julius stepped forward from behind her.

Your Highness Boromias, could you please tell us your intention in bringing your old friend here? We’ve already answered that there’s no problem with costs. If that’s all you need, please take your friend and leave.”

When Julius said "old friend," Boromias looked uncomfortable. Stef also seemed to have been touched on a sore spot, his face twisting with anger as he spoke:

“So it’s true—the Ehlertt family has sided with the First Princess!?”

I am simply supporting my lover as an individual. I am an ally of those she wishes to support, and I will never become an ally of those who would punish her unreasonably.”

Boromias raised his voice at Julius’s words:

Julius! I have no intention of punishing the alchemist!”

“If you truly have no such intention, you should quickly silence your friend’s thoughtless chirping. No one here can tell that Your Highness has no such intention.”

“Chirping!?”

Stef’s face grew even redder with anger. Julius ignored Stef and continued:

That friend may chirp pleasantly in Your Highness’s ears, but that chirping is jarring and unpleasant to many others. Have you forgotten that it was for this very reason Her Majesty the Queen had him removed from your side?”

Boromias also grimaced with displeasure at Julius’s words.

“It’s my business who I keep at my side. Don’t meddle, Julius!”

I only wanted to confirm whether you had forgotten Her Majesty the Queen’s words, but if that was meddling, I apologize.”

I haven’t forgotten! But in the dungeon, emotions run high. What’s wrong with keeping a trusted friend nearby to calm my mind?”

I know that’s often nothing wrong with that. By the way, what did you need?”

I just came to see the panacea! I’ve already accomplished what I came for!”

“Would you like a bowl?”

When Karen cheerfully joined the conversation, all three men looked at her as if seeing something unbelievable. When Boromias saw Karen’s absent-minded face, he lost momentum for his raised fist and sighed.

I don’t need any! Use it to manage the adventurers according to my orders! We’re leaving, Stef!”

“B-But Your Highness. It’s a panacea! Don’t you want any?”

I don’t take back my words!”

“B-But…”

Stef apparently wanted the panacea. He looked longingly at the pot, glared at Julius, glared at Karen, and then left.
